Jelle Seegers x Mahjouba Initiative Residency
30 May, Jelle Seegers x Mahjouba Initiative Residency, A presentation at Malhoun, Malhoun, Gueliz, 7pm to 9pm
Started in 2016 by Moroccan-based artist Eric van Hove the Mahjouba Initiative (@mahjouba_initiative) is an ongoing project challenging the role of craft production in the modern age. Rooted in the heritage, infrastructures, and skills of Moroccan craft, the initiative seeks to carve out space for artisans in local consumer markets through the production of a Moroccan, craft-made electric motorcycle.
The initiative has developed as a platform for collaboration between artisans, engineers, designers, universities, cultural institutions, and private organisations, with economic, social, and ecological sustainability being central to this endeavour.
From May 15th – June 5th 2024, with the support of the Embassy of the Netherlands in Morocco, Jelle Seegers will join the Mahjouba Initiative as a designer in residence. Bringing a Solar Metal Smelter to Marrakech, the residency will bring together Moroccan crafts people and Jelle’s off-grid, solar-powered manufacturing technology.
The residency is produced by designer Ned Kaar (@nedkaar) in partnership with Fenduq (@atelier_eric_van_hove), the atelier of artist Eric van Hove.
