Hydraulic Democracies: Transmitting the story of Figuig with Fayçal Lahrouchi, Dounia Mseffer, Fatima Kandar and Zoubida Benali
Continuing the centring of women, water and imaginaries of water justice brought forward in this edition by Hiba Baddou, we are joined by Dounia Mseffer and Fayçal Lahrouch and Figuig community member for an en evening of discussion that centres the oasis of Figuig, Collective water governance and the women at the heart of a struggle that continues to advocate against resource privatisation.
The conversation follows the trajectory of Dounia and Fayçal’s sonic explorations in Figuig by centring water not just as a utility but rather as a resource that underpins the social and spiritual dimensions of this special place and the communities that continue to advocate for its tradtiional governance, with women being the guardians of the cultural practices that prevent water fom becoming desacralised.
Guided by the questions both sound documentaries ask us to consider, Fayçal and Dounia will be in dialogue with one another and with Fatima and Zoubida about the history of this special region and what we can lessons it provides us in the height of climate and social breakdown.
